Day 1
You start your holiday with a flight to Vancouver, followed by a short hop to Victoria, at the southern end of Vancouver Island. Enjoy an evening stroll along the pretty harbourfront.
Day 2
You have a day to explore Victoria. There are some lovely parks here, several interesting museums and galleries, and 20 minutes away the award-winning Butchart Gardens where you could easily spend a few hours wandering amongst the creative and colourful floral displays.
Day 3
Collect a hire car this morning and make your way to Ucluelet on the west coast, at one end of the Pacific Rim Provincial Park. Stop en route at Cathedral Grove, a rare stand of ancient Douglas fir trees, some of which are 800 years old and 75 metres tall!
Day 4
Today you take fantastic boat trip to look for black bears. They forage for shellfish along the shoreline at low tide so you will gently cruise through the nearby sounds looking for them and enjoying some lovely coastal scenery along the way.
Day 5
Today you return to the water, but this time under your own steam! Join a guide for sea kayaking around the inlets of Clayoquot Sound, with a stop at Meares Island for a walk along the ‘Big Tree Tail’. This is a great opportunity to learn about the rainforest environment of the region, and to hopefully see some wildlife along the way.
Day 6
Today you make your way back across the interior of the island and head to Campbell River, on the east coast. Visit the Maritime Heritage Centre this afternoon and have dinner at ‘Dicks’, one the of the island’s most famous fish and chip shops!
Day 7
You join a half day marine wildlife safari today, departing from Campbell River and heading in to the Discovery Passage where you will hopefully see some diverse marine wildlife such as humpback whales, orca, Pacific Harbour seals,, white-sided dolphins and an array of birdlife. Keep your eyes peeled!
Day 8
Today you make your way north to the top end of Vancouver Island where you will find the small towns of Telegraph Cove, Port McNeill and Port Hardy. Any of these are a good base from which to explore the area.
Day 9
You have a day at leisure today and might like to visit Alert Bay, a short ferry ride away on Cormorant Island. Here lives the oldest community on Vancouver Island, a thriving fishing village with a strong First Nations Heritage.
Day 10
A day to relax in this area. There are some great walking trails in the area, both inland and along the coast, and a couple of lovely little museums – the Whale Interpretive Centre in Telegraph Cove and Port Hardy Museum – which are worth a visit.
Day 11
Start your journey back down the coast and take the ferry from Campbell River over to Quadra Island.
Day 12
A day to enjoy the activities around Quadra. Covered in rainforest and with long stretches of pebble beach this is a great place to go walking, cycling, kayaking or even, if you’re feeling brave, for a swim.
Day 13
Return to the mainland and continue your journey south, perhaps taking the more scenic route along the coast through the little towns of Saratoga Beach and Qualicum Beach. You will stop overnight in Parksville or Nanaimo.
Day 14
Continue on to Victoria today and return your car before boarding your overnight flight home.

Whilst is may look small on a map of Canada, Vancouver Island is actually a similar size to the Netherlands, meaning that you can easily spend your entire holiday here alone. It boasts endless seascapes and a rugged interior, and is dotted with interesting towns and of course the vibrant provincial capital of Victoria. Some of Canada’s most iconic wildlife – bears, whales and bald eagles – can all be found on this self-drive route, along with First Nations culture, a host of outdoor activities and off-the-beaten-track trails which are just waiting to be explored.

2 nights Victoria – 3 nights Tofino/Ucluelet – 2 nights Campbell River – 3 nights Northern Vancouver Island – 2 nights Quadra Island – 1 nights Parksville/Nanaimo
